How To Transfer Large Files Over the Internet
This is the best and easiest way I’ve found to transfer files over the Internet, and its free. This allows you, for example, to send a large file from work to home, or to send a large file to another person. By large, I mean files up to three gig in size (after compression).
Step One: Make the file as small as possible
The smaller your file the faster this procedure. You can easily compress your files, making them up to 95% smaller, by using a compression utility such as WinZip. I use a program called 7-Zip. I prefer 7-zip because I get files that are smaller than those I get from WinZip. Also, 7-zip is free whereas WinZip is not.
Step Two: The Actual File Transfer
I regularly transfer files in excess of 3 gig with a free email account from Lycos Online Email. You create an email and attach your file as you would with any online email service (e.g. yahoo mail, gmail, etc.) and click send.
Here’s the good part
The recipient of your email doesn’t receive the file (which is probably too large for her email account). She receives a link to download the file, which Lyco’s saves on their server.
Note: Lycos only promises to save the file for thirty days or ten downloads, whichever comes first.
REMEMBER: If your file contains sensitive information, be sure to encrypt the file before sending.
